A Lover's Address to a Withered Flower
Charlotte von Ahlefeld

This flower- ah, from her it came!
Though withered, I greet it, still, with great acclaim.
Its colour has long since faded
Like blessings that time has shaded;
But, I revere it, all the same,
Because this flower- from her it came.

In our grove are a thousand shimmering blooms
Whose brief and colourful life their scent perfumes
But, for me, their beauty has no charm
If it is not her hand that picks them.
Long faded flower, you, alone, shall be
The gift that spring has offered me.

Tears well up to dull my gaze,
As I think back to those glorious days,
When she plucked you in the morning dew
And, tenderly, to my heart I pressed you.
My happiness, dear flower, has flown
And, like your colour, never will return.
