Paul Verlaine

Le ciel est, par-dessus le toit
(Prison)

Paul Verlaine

The Sky Is, There, Over the Roof
(Prison)

Paul Verlaine

The sky is, there, over the roof,
So fair, so calm!
A tree, there, over the roof,
Sways its crown.

The bell that is seen in the sky
Softly chimes.
A bird that is seen in the tree
Trills a refrain.

My God, my God, all life is here
Simple and peaceful.
This quiet murmuring
Carried from town.

-What have you done, who witnesses this,
Weeping such tears?
What have you, who is witness,
Done with your youth?

The Sky above the Roof
Paul Verlaine

The sky above the roof
Is calm and sweet
A tree above the roof
Bends in the heat

A bell from out the blue
Drowsily rings
A bird from out the blue
Plaintively sings

O God! A life is here
Simple and fair
Murmurs of strife are, here,
Lost in the air

Why dost thou weep
O heart
Poured out in tears?
What hast thou done
O heart
With thy spent years?

Der Himmel, So Schön, So Ruhig
(Im Gefängnis)

Paul Verlaine

Einfach und ruhig;
Und das Rauschen der Stadt
Wird leise getragen.

-Was hast du getan, wer dies erlebt,
Daß du so weinst?
Was hast du, wer dies erlebt,
Mit deiner Jugend getan?
